Mister Zion wins Cobram Cup

Promising ex-kiwi pacer Mister Zion won the biggest race of his brief career to date when he scored a stylish victory in the Listed $25,000 Cobram Pacing Cup on December 27.

Despite beginning awkwardly from the ace draw the Geoff Webster trained 4yo son of Red River Hanover worked his way to the front in the 2,678m standing start affair and from then on kept the pace on, ensuring he was able to kick clear in the straight to take a 2.5m victory over stable-mate Tear It All Away and the fast finishing Karlsruhe – rating a tidy 1:59.9 for the last mile.

The winner of two for Jimmy Curtin in New Zealand, Mister Zion has now won 11 of his 18 race-day starts for $82,477.

Bred by Ernie Knight of Christchurch, Mister Zion is the best-performed foal to date of Holmes Hanover mare Cross Lady.

The gelding’s next target will be the $100,000 Group 1 South Australia Cup at Globe Derby on the 9th of January.
