Mister Zion takes out Mildura Cup
4yo Red River Hanover gelding Mister Zion continues to make his presence felt in the Australian open class ranks winning the $50,000 Group 2 Park Douglas Printing Mildura Pacing Cup Final (2600m) on Saturday evening.
The South Australian Cup winner headed straight to the lead from barrier five and despite being taken on by Sammy Maguire for much of the race still had enough in reserve to reel off a 56.4 last half and hold out Inter Dominion Consolation place-getter Sammy Maguire and boom mare Make Mine Cullen by a head at the line.
It was the gelding's 14th career win from just 23 starts and his 12th since crossing the Tasman last season. The win also saw his earnings increase to $197,347.
Bred by Ernie Knight of Christchurch Mister Zion is the fifth and best winner out of Holmes Hanover mare Cross Lady.
