Mister Zion wins SA Cup
The Geoff Webster trained and driven Red River Hanover gelding held the lead easily off the gate and with the hot favourite Smoken Up hampering his chances by breaking at the start always looked a winning chance. Entering the straight for the final time the only danger was the Miracle Mile and Victoria Cup runner-up Smoken Up but his tough run had taken its toll and Mister Zion was able to hold on to score a half-neck victory in a slick mile rate of 1:58.7 for the 2,645m race.
Having made his race-day debut less than 12 months ago for Jimmy Curtin, the lightly raced 4yo has now won 12 of his 19 starts to date for almost $150,000 in stakes-earnings.
The last start Cobram Cup winner was bred by Ernie Knight of Christchurch and is the best-performed foal of Holmes Hanover mare Cross Lady.
