Sportswriter wins NA Cup
Last season's champion US juvenile pacer Sportswriter made a well timed return to form to take out the C$1.5 million North America Cup at Mohawk Racetrack, Canada on Saturday evening (NA time).
The Artsplace colt assumed the lead in the rich 3yo feature at the quarter pole and was never headed during the remainder of the race, holding out We Will See (Western Hanover) and Piece Of The Rock (Rocknroll Hanover) to score a three-quarter length victory in a time of 1:48.6.
In recording his eighth lifetime win, Sportswriter became Artsplace's 17th millionaire pacer, with the colt's earnings almost doubling to US$1.56 million courtesy of this latest victory.
In winning, Sportswriter also became just the fifth horse in history to claim Canada's richest 2 and 3yo pacing events, the Metro Pace and the North America Cup. The others to have completed this feat previously are Presidential Ball, Gothic Dream, Rocknroll Hanover and Somebeachsomewhere.
