Washakie toughs it out in Governors Cup
Millionaire pacer Washakie warmed up for next week’s Inter Dominion Pacing Championship series with a gritty win in the $40,000 Group 3 Global Insurance Broking Governors Cup (2,100m) at Gloucester Park on Friday evening.
The Badlands Hanover gelding sat outside Western Australian iron-horse Has The Answers for much of the race with it turning into an out and out match race between the two over the finals stages. The pair went stride for stride the length of the straight before Washakie managed to just get his nose ahead on the line and score by a short half head.
It was the 41st win of the John McCarthy trained pacer’s career with the 8yo having now won $1,332,345 in stakes-money.
Bred by Bigstone Lodge Ltd, Washakie is the first foal of OK Bye mare Shoshoni Sunrise.
The Badlands Hanover gelding Heza Trick was also successful over the weekend, registering his 10th win for the season when taking out the $20,000 Primo United Gourmet VHRSC Pace at Melton on Hunter Cup night.
