Former kiwi pacer Washakie claimed yet another 2009/10 Barastoc Grand Circuit race with a hard fought victory in Friday’s $400,000 Group 1 Find Thirty Every Day Western Australia Pacing Cup at Gloucester Park.
The John McCarthy trained son of Badlands Hanover didn’t exactly get an easy trip either, caught wide for the first lap of the 2,536m feature before pressing on to the lead, the 6yo wasn’t given a moment’s peace with Im Themightyquinn and Bonavista Bay moving up outside of him. On entering the straight for the final time Washakie and Im Themightyquinn went stride for stride, with the WA star clearly heading Washakie, but in a gritty display, the Queensland trained gelding fought back to take a 1.2m victory at the line. The 6yo Live Or Die gelding Our Malabar ran on well for third.
The mile rate of 1:56.3 smashed the previous record for the distance of 1:57.7 set by Tealsby Karita in 2007.
Having already won the Group 1 Treuer Memorial this season, Washakie has now won 24 races and $700,000 in stakes. He will now head back to the East Coast to contest further Grand Circuit races.
Bred by Lester Paisley’s Big Stone Lodge Ltd Washakie is the first foal of the 6-win OK Bye mare Shoshoni Sunrise.
