BONDY CLEANS UP IN HUNTER CUP

The David and Catherine Butt trained Bondy (pictured) continued his wonderful run of form for the 2009/10 season with a superb front-running display in the $400,000 Group 1 Big6 Hunter Cup at Moonee Valley on February 6.

Backing up after a track record win in the Pure Steel at Ballarat the previous weekend, Bondy made his usual safe beginning from the stand and soon assumed his favoured position as pacemaker in the prestigious 3,065m event, taking the field through a comfortable lead time of 1:55 before slowly increasing the tempo over the final quarters and sprinting home the best in 28.5 to win by 2.9m from perennial Grand Circuit bridesmaid Karloo Mick and rising star Im Themightyquinn

The Hunter Cup was the 8yo son of Live Or Die's sixth win from seven starts this season with the outstanding pacer compiling a fantastic overall record of 21 wins and $577,251 in stakes-earnings.

Bred by Russell Hockham and Bill Pearce of Victoria, Australia, Bondy is the first foal of an unraced Falcon Seelster mare in Killarney, the dam of five winners from five foals of racing age to date.

Bondy will now head to Sydney to compete in the Inter Dominion Series starting at Harold Park on February 19.

It was a good night for the stock of Live Or Die with the former South Australian Derby winner Living On Fire taking out the Group 3 4YO Bonanza earlier on the card, improving his career record to 17 wins and almost $260,000 in stakes.

Another former Derby winner in Tanabi Bromac also had a successful month, following up his earlier Horsham Cup win with victory in the Group 2 Shepparton Gold Cup on January 23.

Live Or Die remains Australia’s leading sire with progeny earnings of over $1.8 million for the season to date.

WASHAKIE VICTORIOUS IN WA PACING CUP

Former kiwi pacer Washakie (pictured) claimed yet another 2009/10 Barastoc Pacers Grand Circuit Series event when a gutsy winner of the $400,000 Group 1 Find Thirty Every Day Western Australia Pacing Cup at Gloucester Park on January 22.

The John McCarthy trained son of Badlands Hanover didn’t have things go his own way in the 2,536m feature with him caught wide for the entire first lap before pressing on to the lead and having the likes of Im Themightyquinn and Bonavista Bay move up to sit outside him.

Entering the straight for the final time Washakie and Im Themightyquinn went stride for stride, with the Western Australian star clearly heading the 6yo, but in a gritty display the Queensland trained gelding rallied after looking beaten to surge to the lead once more and cross the line 1.2m clear. Another Nevele sired runner, Our Malabar (Live Or Die) was an eye-catching third after being held-up in the run home.

Washakie’s smart mile rate of 1:56.3 also smashed the previous track record for the distance, 1:57.7 set by Tealsby Karita in 2007.

Already the winner of the Group1 Treuer Memorial this season, Washakie has now won 24 races and just shy of $700,000 in stakes. He currently lies in third place on the Barastoc Grand Circuit leader board behind fellow kiwi breds Monkey King and Bettor’s Strike.

Bred by Lester Paisley’s Big Stone Lodge Ltd Washakie is the first foal of the six-win OK Bye mare Shoshoni Sunrise

The WA Pacing Cup Consolation, run on the same evening, was also taken out by a son of Badlands Hanover with Ima Rocket Star recording his 12th life-time win in the $25,000 event and improving his earnings to $183,739.

Badlands is having a great season across the Tasman with his progeny earnings recently topping the $1 million mark and him lying fifth on the Sires’ Table.

In NZ, the ever-improving 4yo mare Crystal Star made it three wins on end when defeating last season’s Derby winner Sleepy Tripp in the Group 3 Signprint 4YO Championship at Forbury Park on February 5.

The Mark Jones trained mare has now won 10 races and $107,465 in stakes earnings.

TINTIN IN AMERICA SUBLIME IN FUTURITY

Reigning Breeders’ Crown and Harness Jewels champion Tintin In America (pictured) produced his trademark withering finish at Cambridge Raceway on January 15 to gun down some of the country’s best four-year-olds’ and take out the $50,000 Group 2 JLT 4YO Futurity Stakes.

Second last on straightening for home in the 2,700m feature, the 4yo son of McArdle kicked into top gear and blazed past his rivals to nab Superstars Championship winner Highview Tommy on the line and score a breath-taking neck victory.

It was the Geoff Small runner’s 12th career-win and with a last start second to open class stable-mate Awesome Armbro his earnings stand at an impressive $605,845.

Bred by Beryl Pears and owned by the ATC Trot 2008 Syndicate, Tintin In America is the first foal of four-win In The Pocket mare Zenterfold, the dam also of the current 2yo NZ record holder over 1700m, Zenstar

Last season’s Young Guns Final place-getter Eridanus has also made a sensational return to the track from injury, winning his last two on end by a collective margin of almost 6 lengths, whilst across the Tasman the kiwi bred 3yo Franco Jazzman set a new Western Australian state record of 1:55.7 for the 1,730m trip, establishing himself as one of the early favourites for the WA Derby in April.

Their sire McArdle is well represented in next week’s Yearling Sales with 17 in the Australasian Classic Sale and 40 in the NZ Premier.

A quality draft at Karaka will see the likes of a daughter of former NZ Oaks winner Caps Off (Lot 115), a ¾ sister to Attorney General (Lot 118), a brother to leading juvenile Top Tempo (Lot 163) and a colt from a ½ sister to Il Vicolo from the family of Gotta Go Cullen and Stunin Cullen (Lot 73) go through the ring, whilst the Christchurch sale includes a colt from NZ Cup winner Mainland Banner (Lot 5), a ½ brother to top 2yo filly Lancome (Lot 400) and colts from the multiple Group 1 winning mares Oaxaca Lass and Under Cover Lover.

SALES SERIES NEXT WEEK

Two years of planning and hard work is about to come to fruition next week with the PGG Wrightson Yearling Sales Series kicking off at Karaka on Monday, followed by three days of selling at the Canterbury Agricultural Park in Christchurch and we wish breeders and vendors all the best.

Plenty of Nevele R sired young stock will be on offer over the four days with nice drafts by all our stallions.

In terms of our proven sires, Falcon Seelster, Live Or Die and Artsplace all have good-sized quality consignments.

The evergreen Falcon Seelster, who already has two smart juvenile winners to his credit this season in Eleanor Roosevelt and Mighty Flying Thomas, has 19 youngsters offered at Auckland and 41 at Christchurch, with Lot 155 at Auckland, a ¾ sister to champion pacer Elsu, likely to attract plenty of interest as will Lots 60, a ½ brother to Derby place-getter Cullen’s Legacy and NHT Sales Race victor Kobe Bryant, and 116, a full brother to the Group race placed juvenile Agios Nikolaos as well as the dam of outstanding filly Lauraella.

Of his yearlings catalogued at the Premier Sale in Christchurch Lot 141 is worth a look being the first colt from Group 1 Vicbred winner Tandias Courage, as are Lot 281, a colt from a sister to the mighty Christian Cullen and Lot 284, a close relative of Attorney General

Live Or Die has four entered in the Auckland Sale, including a ½ brother to Open Class pacer The Big Dog (Lot 24) and a further 22 in the NZ Premier Sale at Christchurch with the likely stars there a full sister to recent Grand Circuit winner Bondy (386), a ½ sister to the talented but ill-fated Almost A Christian (300) and a colt out of Group 1 winning filly Solberge (Lot 124).

Champion US sire Artsplace has perhaps his best NZ draft to date with his seven Karaka lots including a full brother to last year’s Ready To Run sales topper and recent star trialist Amazing Art (Lot 21), a terrific racing and breeding prospect in a filly from a winning sister to Changeover (Lot 11), and a ½ brother to the Group 1 winners’ Stunin Cullen and Coburg (Lot 72). His Christchurch consignment (15 in total) has a number of gems too – with Lot 107, a ½ brother to Champion filly One Dream, likely to be sought after. There should also be some intense bidding on Lot 90, a precocious looking colt out of a sister to Sly Flyin from the family of last season’s champion 2yo pacer Smiling Shard.

As mentioned above in the Tintin In America article McArdle has a very nice 2010 draft on paper with youngsters by some outstanding mares up for grabs.

The 2005 Little Brown Jug winner P-Forty Seven has a strong consignment in just his second year at the Sales with his Auckland selection including a ½ brother to the promising 3yo River Field amongst his three entrants. His Christchurch Premier draft of 13 yearlings includes a ½ brother to recent Group 2 winner Four Starzzz Flash (Lot 261) and a ½ sister to Open Class mare Nearea Franco (Lot 57). Typically nice types, his youngsters should sell well again after averaging $23,000 at the 2009 Premier Sales.

Red River Hanover, the sire of recent Grand Circuit winner Mister Zion, has six yearlings catalogued at Karaka, including a daughter of Group 1 NSW Oaks winner Dancingonmoonlight (Lot 127) who is bred on the same Red River – Holmes Hanover cross as Mister Zion, and a further 11 over the first two days at Christchurch. The Christchurch draft includes a ½ brother to former 4YO Superstars Championship winner Bruzem (Lot 289), as well as a ½ sister to the Group 2 winning juvenile and $250,000 earner Beach Romance (Lot 411).

With only a handful of 2008/09 foals the popular Badlands Hanover has a smaller representation than usual with just two entrants in the NZ Premier Sale, including a colt out of a Falcon Seelster ½ sister to the Group 1 winners’ Another Party and Party Party (Lot 405), and a further four on the final day. Of interest to many on the third day will be Lot 421, a full sister to the useful pacer Long John Anvil from the family of Ohoka Rebel (also by Badlands Hanover) and Arma Fake.

Our trotting sires’ Continentalman and Dream Vacation have some beautifully bred yearlings on offer too with the former’s Auckland draft featuring a daughter of Group 3 winner and Rowe Cup runner-up Miss Whiplash (Lot 10) and his Christchurch entrants a filly from a winning ½ sister to last season’s Victoria Trotting Oaks Aldebaran Dream (Lot 130) from the family of Thanksgiving, Diedre’s Pride and Diedre Don.

The Dream Vacation yearlings have sold well in recent years and the 2010 Sale shouldn’t be any exception with a first foal from a full sister to the champion trotter Take A Moment (Lot 122) a likely star in Christchurch.
