Lightly raced as a 2yo, Western Ideal was only out of the money on one occasion, winning three races in his freshman season, including a leg of the Pennsylvania Sires Stakes in 1:54.6 as well as the Simpson Stakes.
Off the scene for his entire 3yo season, Western Ideal made it back to the track as a 4yo, taking on America’s best Free For Allers. He won or placed in half of his races as a 4yo but this was really just a warm up for what would be a sensational 5yo season.
As a 5yo, Western Ideal won 10 of his 14 starts, all in sub 1:50 times, set a new world record of 1:48 flat at the Meadowlands and established a new seasonal earnings record for older pacers of over $1.2 million. His victories included the Canadian Pacing Derby, the Breeders Crown Final in a then record 1:48 mile rate, the William Haughton Memorial and the Graduate Series Final. He was an obvious choice as the Dan Patch and Nova Older Pacing Horse of 2000 as a result of his fantastic season.
