The Barry Purdon and Scott Phelan trained Always B Miki colt Cold Chisel took out the Group 2 Young Guns Cardigan Bay Stakes at Alexandra Park on Friday, with stablemate and fellow son of Always B Miki, Always B Elite, a close third.

Cold Chisel secured the trail behind Yourdoinamazinsweety, who began quickly off the gate, and with no mid race moves to the lead, was able to sprint home the best up the passing lane to score by a neck from the race favourite Escape Artist, with Always B Elite a head back in third.

The Always B Miki colt has now won two of his three race-day and earned  $45,990 in stakes-money.

A $100,000 purchase by Montana Park Pty Ltd at the 2022 NZB Christchurch Yearling Sale, Cold Chisel is out of the Presidential Ball mare Shezaball, a Southland Oaks placed, winner of eight races.

Always B Miki’s daughters were also to the fore in the evening’s fillies features, with Diamonds Are Forever a massive second in the Group 1 Northern Oaks after galloping at the start and trailing the field by open lengths, and Kiss finishing runner-up in the Group 2 Delightful Lady Classic.
