Always B Miki sired the first two runners home in the third heat of the Young Gun Series for 2-year-old colts and geldings at Alexandra Park on Friday, with the Barry Purdon and Scott Phelan trained Cold Chisel holding out stablemate Always B Elite in a close finish.

The race favourite, Cold Chisel capitalised on a gun trip in the one-one to score by a head from Always B Elite, who was eye-catching when flashing home from last to very nearly best his stablemate on the line.

Both 2-year-olds are out of Cam Fella line mares, with Cold Chisel out of the eight-win Presidential Ball mare, Shezaball, and Always B Elite out of the six-win Bettor’s Delight mare Gold Elite, a full sister to the millionaire pacer Gold Ace.

Both head into Friday night’s Group 2 Young Guns Cardigan Bay Stakes as leading chances.
