Always Be Batman stars in NZBS Aged Classic

The Robert and Jenna Dunn trained Always Be Batman was an eye-catching winner of the Listed $50,000 NZB Standardbred Yearling Sales Aged Classic at Kaikoura on Monday afternoon.

The 4-year-old son of Always B Miki settled three back in the running line but was shuffled to second last with a lap remaining.

With less than 400m to run, reinsman Hayden Douglas swung wide, and Always Be Batman charged down the centre of the track to beat Iron Brigade by three-quarters of a length.

It was Always Be Batman’s eighth career win, lifting his lifetime earnings to $111,325.

Bred by Paul Bielby, he was purchased at the 2023 NZBS Christchurch Yearling Sale by Invercargill trainer Jeremy Douglas for what now seems like a bargain price of $14,000.

Always Be Batman is out of Flying Anvil, a six-time winner by Art Major.
