For the second year running, the Listed PGG Wrightson Standardbred Uncut Gems Trotters Classic (2,600m) has been taken out by the progeny of Muscle Mass, with the Kevin Fairbairn trained Ruthless Kayla proving too strong for her rivals in this year’s instalment of the $40,000 feature at Addington Raceway on Friday evening.

The 5-year-old daughter of Muscle Mass swept to the lead with just over a mile to run in the trotter’s feature and fought doggedly the length of the home straight to hold out Valloria by a neck at the line.

It was the mare’s sixth lifetime win, with the prize-money taking her earnings to $105,835.

Bred by Kevin and Pauline Fairbairn, Ruthless Kayla is out of the well-performed Britewell mare Ruthless Jenny, a winner of the Greenlane Trotting Cup and Group 1 placed in the NZ Trotting Championship.

Last year’s Uncut Gems winner, Massive Metro went on to take out the Group 1 National Trot on New Year’s Eve, along with the Group 3 Greenlane Trotting Cup.
