Franco Indie was a game winner, after a tough run, of the Group 1 Sires Stakes Final at Addington Raceway on Cup Day.

In the breeze for the entire 1980m trip, Franco Indie kicked clear of the pacemaker Casino Action at the top of the home straight then resolutely held out his fast finishing stablemate Franco Mac to score by a half head at the line in a slick 1:53.9 mile rate.

It was Franco Indie’s fifth win from just six race-day starts, taking the 2-year-old’s earnings to $127,187.

Raced by a large group of owners, including Nevele R Stud and Alabar NZ Ltd, Franco Indie was purchased for $35,000 at the 2020 NZB Christchurch National Yearling Sale.

Bred by Spreydon Lodge, he is out of the unraced Christian Cullen mare Idancedwithcullen, a daughter of the juvenile Group race winner Idancedallnight.

He is the first New Zealand Group 1 winner for his sire Always B Miki, and the third from the stallion’s debut Southern Hemisphere crop - with the Australian bred Tricky Miki and The Miki Taker also winning Group 1 features in 2021.
