Vessam completed a Southern juvenile stakes race double with victory in the Group 2 Diamond Creek Farm 2YO Classic (2,200m) at Invercargill yesterday afternoon, having already won the Kindergarten Stakes earlier in the month.

A short priced favourite, Vessam began quickly from the outside of the gate to take the lead before briefly handing up to stablemate Major Hot.

With just over a lap to go Vessam retook the lead and from there proved too strong for his rivals, crossing the finish line three-quarters of a length ahead of Major Hot with a further two and three-quarter lengths back to the third placed horse.

The son of Vincent remains undefeated having won all three of his race-day starts to date for earnings of $63,250.

Bred by co-owner Hazel van Opzeeland, Vessam is out of the winning Bettor’s Delight mare Imke B, a grand-daughter of the two-time NZ Broodmare of the Year Interchange - the dam of NZ harness great Elsu.

Vincent is currently third on the NZ 2YO Sires List, behind only Always B Miki and Art Major.
