The Wayne Potter trained A Rocknroll Dance gelding Reigning Pepper was an eye-catching winner of the $51,000 Group 2 Ultimate Machete NSW Breeders Challenge 3YO Colts and Geldings Regional Final (1740m) at Wagga at Riverina Paceway on August 4.

A qualifying heat winner the previous weekend in a scintillating 1:52.4, Reigning Pepper drew perfectly on the inside of the second line to land the trail behind main rival and fellow heat winner Game Set Major.

Travelling comfortably throughout, Reigning Pepper simply bided his time on the leader’s back before charging home up the sprint lane to score by 2.2m from the pace-making Game Set Major and Colossal Stride. Watch replay.

The mile rate for the 1740m trip was a slick 1:52.9, the last half in 55.7.

It was Reigning Pepper’s fifth career win to date, with the winner’s purse boosting his overall stakes earnings to $58,945.

The gelding is out of the 11-win Presidential Ball mare Sweet As Reign, who was a Group 1 runner-up in the South Australia Oaks as a three-year-old and is the dam of the $150,000 plus performer Shadow Reign.
